KD8OPI and N6GUS activated Mt Orizaba on 2 Feb 2011 @ approx 18:00-19:00 UTC, representing the first SOTA activation for both Catalina Island and Mt. Orizaba. Equipment was relatively simple, a Yaesu FT 60 and an Arrow II yagi antenna. Elevation was 2103 ft, the now accepted true elevation of the peak. 10 QSO’s made in an hr or so, all on 2 meter FM simplex; operating conditions were poor thanks to wind gusts up to 40 kts. Thanks to our “chasers”, WB6NQW, KI6UCN, KD6HJR, KC6FLG, N6SDN, KJ6BNX, N6BKL, K6QDD, KG6SYX, and K9KAO. This video is a quick 1 min recap, the wind made it impossible to record QSO contacts.
Terrible wind noise, but demonstrates difficulties operating at summit elevations.
